Kurti Appoints New Chief Negotiator as Dialogue Continues
Brussels – Prime Minister Albin Kurti has appointed himself as Kosovo’s Chief Negotiator, marking a shift in the approach to ongoing discussions with Serbia. The move is also viewed as a potential opportunity to pursue more private and focused negotiations. For several years, Kosovo’s negotiations with Serbia were led by Besnik Bislimi, Kurti’s closest advisor and Deputy Prime Minister.
Bislimi’s leadership was instrumental in achieving the 2023 Ohrid Agreement, a 11-point framework established during the tenure of EU diplomats Josep Borell and Miroslav Lajcak. The agreement included provisions for a “Self-Government” area to address the needs of the Serbian community within Kosovo. Following the agreement, the European Union has repeatedly emphasized the importance of respecting and implementing all dialogue agreements.
Kurti’s appointment reflects a strategic adjustment in the direction of negotiations. The focus now shifts to a leadership directly involved in the process, aiming to solidify the progress made and establish a clear path forward. The ongoing dialogue remains a key priority for Kosovo’s future.
