Large fire on a Croatian island

Two significant fires erupted today on the Croatian island of Korčula, prompting a major emergency response effort. Initial reports suggest that the blaze, described as large in scale, may have been ignited by lightning strikes. The incident has severely impacted the area situated between the communities of Blata and Smokvica.

Due to the challenging and difficult terrain surrounding the outbreak, firefighting efforts required specialized resources. To combat the spread of the fire, Canadair firefighting aircraft were deployed to provide aerial support to ground crews. Emergency teams are currently engaged in sustained efforts to bring the flames under control and to prevent any further expansion of the incident.

As a direct consequence of the ongoing emergency operations, local authorities have mandated the closure of a section of the roadway within the affected zone. While ground personnel continue to work to contain the situation, officials have not yet released a comprehensive assessment of the property damage. The operational status remains fluid as extinguishing efforts continue throughout the day.

The focus of all responding agencies is on managing the large-scale fire event and ensuring public safety across the island.
