Group of Historians Urges Halt to Investigation of Shkëlzen Gashi
A group of historians and Albanian scholars, including Sir Noel Malcolm and Oliver Jens Schmitt, have addressed the Special Prosecutors’ Office of Kosovo requesting a cessation of investigations into Shkëlzen Gashi concerning the exhibition on massacres in Kosovo. The letter argues that scientific evaluation of scholarly works should be determined by the academic community itself, facilitated through open discussion. It asserts that institutions of justice should return this responsibility to the scientific community.
The letter highlights the fundamental principles of freedom of science and expression, essential components of a legal and democratic state. Specifically, the group advocates for a public debate surrounding historical and scientific discussions, ensuring these remain open and unrestricted. The letter emphasizes the importance of these freedoms within a legal framework.
