Following a meeting with the President of the European Council, António Costa, North Macedonia’s Prime Minister, Hristijan Mickoski, reaffirmed the nation’s dedication to the European path. However, Mickoski stressed that the country expects the entire integration process to operate based on established principles, demonstrated merit, and clear predictability. During the joint conference, the discussions were described as comprehensive and substantive.
The dialogue covered several critical areas defining the nation’s future, including its trajectory toward becoming a European member, necessary domestic reforms, economic stability, adherence to the rule of law, the regional geopolitical situation, and required institutional transformations. Speaking after the meeting, Mickoski addressed the conditions for progress, stating clearly that the nation was not seeking special privileges or the relaxation of established rules. Instead, he emphasized a requirement for fairness and accountability.
“We are not asking for privileges, we are not asking for eased rules, and we are not asking for anything more than what is due to others,” Mickoski stated. He concluded by asserting that the nation requires “a credible and predictable process in which reforms, work, and fulfilled obligations are realistically assessed.” This statement underscores the government’s commitment to aligning with European standards while demanding a transparent and merit-based assessment framework for its accession journey.
