Missing laboratory worker found dead in New Mexico nearly a year after she disappeared

Human remains were recently found in a New Mexico forest, identified as belonging to a laboratory worker who has been missing for nearly a year. The individual has been identified as Melissa Casias, an administrative assistant at the Los Alamos National Laboratory. Casias was initially reported missing last spring.

Her case had been linked to broader speculation concerning several deaths and disappearances within the U.S. scientific community. Authorities were notified on May 28 by a mountaineer who discovered the remains within the Carson National Forest.

State police confirmed that the New Mexico Office of the Medical Examiner positively identified the body as Casias. In addition to the remains, a pistol was also recovered from the area. According to a statement released by state police, the cause and manner of death remain undetermined as the investigation proceeds.

The body was located in an area that had previously been under restricted control, as detailed in the official report. The circumstances surrounding Casias’s disappearance were not fully disclosed when she was first reported missing. Investigators continue to examine the site as they work to determine the full context of her death.
