Over 1,000 Passengers Detained on Tourist Ship in France Following Illness Outbreak
Bordeaux, France – More than 1,000 passengers are currently being held aboard a UK-operated tourist ship, the Ambition, following a reported outbreak of a gastrointestinal illness. As of today, 49 individuals have reported symptoms, prompting a precautionary response from local health authorities. Passengers aboard the vessel, operated by Ambassador Cruise Line based in Essex, are unable to disembark at the port of Bordeaux.
Thirty-eight passengers have been isolated within their cabins, while the remaining passengers are under observation. Health officials in Bordeaux have stated there is no evidence to suggest a connection between the illness and the recent hantavirus outbreak on another tourist ship. The Ambassador Cruise Line confirmed the death of a 92-year-old male passenger on board on Sunday; however, they reported that he exhibited no symptoms prior to his passing.
Authorities are continuing to investigate the cause of the illness and monitor the situation. The number of affected passengers continues to be assessed, with more than 1,000 passengers currently detained as a preventative measure. Further updates will be provided as they become available.
