More than half of France under red alert as heatwave intensifies

Twenty-nine of France’s 96 regions are currently under red alert as the nation braces for an intensifying heatwave. The Météo-France forecast predicts maximum temperatures surpassing 40°C (104°F) across parts of western France on Monday, with Bordeaux specifically anticipated to reach 43°C. In response to the severe weather, the Ministry of Education reported that approximately 845 schools are closed for the day, while another 1,800 institutions are allowing students to conclude classes early.

Furthermore, dozens of other regions are under orange alert, impacting an estimated 63 million people nationwide. These extreme weather conditions follow a weekend when temperatures reached 40°C, an event severe enough to prompt the suspension of alcohol sales for the annual Fête de la Musique, a national festival traditionally drawing large crowds. The current alert level underscores the significant impact of the heatwave across various parts of France.

Authorities are advising caution as the country remains under elevated weather warnings.
