Asteroid Apophis Set to Pass Near Earth in Coming Years
NASA has announced that asteroid Apophis, a space rock roughly the size of three soccer balls, will pass near Earth within the next three years, presenting a unique opportunity for scientific study. Named after the ancient Egyptian deity associated with chaos, Apophis is currently classified as a “potentially hazardous asteroid.”
The asteroid is anticipated to make its closest approach to Earth on April 13, 2029, with a projected distance of approximately 32,186 kilometers above the planet’s surface. This proximity will bring Apophis closer than many operational satellites.
Scientists are utilizing this event to observe the asteroid up close, gathering valuable data about its composition and trajectory. Despite initial concerns, NASA has affirmed that there is no current risk of collision with Earth. “There is no risk to Earth, or anyone or anything that lives on it, or for astronauts or satellites in space,” stated NASA.
“The event offers a valuable opportunity for observation, but poses no threat.”
