A survey of 2,000 adults across France, Germany, Italy, and the United Kingdom indicates that Spain is the most preferred destination for individuals considering moving and establishing a new life abroad. The research suggests a growing trend toward emigration, as nearly half of the surveyed citizens in these four countries anticipate residing in another nation at some point in the future. The primary factors influencing these decisions include the favorable climate, quality of life, and the cost of living.
According to the study, the cost of living crisis was cited as the leading driver for considering emigration, mentioned by 53% of Britons, 48% of French, 43% of Germans, and 32% of Italians. While Spain emerged as the top choice overall, preferences varied significantly between the surveyed countries. For instance, the French listed Canada as their top destination, while Germans showed a preference for remaining geographically close, naming Austria first.
Britons demonstrated an interest in more distant countries, with Australia and Canada ranking highly. Beyond specific destinations, the study highlighted a shift in lifestyle expectations. Travel expert Holly Rubenstein noted that the traditional model of permanent settlement is declining.
She suggests a rise in “semi-pats”—individuals who do not permanently move to one country but instead live in various locations for defined periods, combining remote work and international experiences. This suggests that future decisions regarding where people live will be increasingly flexible across different countries.
