Travelers returning from the Maldives and Zanzibar have led to the detection of several tropical infections within Kosovo. According to data released by the Ministry of Health, the country has recorded eight cases of West Nile virus, four instances of malaria, three cases of dengue virus, and one case of Zika virus. The Ministry’s data highlights the resurgence of malaria, with four reported cases, marking its reappearance after a two-year period during which no malaria cases had been documented.
Health officials stressed the potential dangers associated with these pathogens. The minister advised caution regarding Zika virus, noting its specific negative impact on pregnant women, and characterized dengue as a hemorrhagic fever. Furthermore, officials cautioned that severe forms of malaria carry a risk of fatality.
In response to these findings, an advisory has been issued to individuals planning travel to regions in Africa and the Indian Ocean, particularly citing Zanzibar and the Maldives. Travelers are strongly urged to adhere to the recommendations provided by the World Health Organization (WHO) concerning necessary vaccinations and preventative health measures to mitigate the risk of contracting these tropical diseases.
