On Liberation Day, Haxhiu: Prekaz remains the place from which the memory of Kosovo’s freedom begins

On June 12th, the Day of Liberation of Kosovo, the President of the Republic of Kosovo, Albulena Haxhiu, accompanied by the acting Prime Minister Albin Kurti, participated in a series of memorial tributes. The ceremony included visits to several significant sites honoring the nation’s history and sacrifices. Attendees paid respects at the “Adem Jashari” Memorial Complex in Prekaz, paying tribute at the gravesites of former President Ibrahim Rugova and activist Adem Demaçi.

The commemoration also spanned the Martyrs’ Graveyard in Pristina and the monument dedicated to hero Zahir Pajaziti, concluding at the NATO Soldiers Memorial. During the observance, Haxhiu emphasized the enduring importance of Prekaz as a site of remembrance for Kosovo’s freedom. She stated that the commemoration of this pivotal day is intrinsically linked to historical events.

“There is no June 12th without the march of 1998,” Haxhiu remarked. She further acknowledged the critical role of the Jashari family, noting that the sacrifices made by Commander Adem Jashari, Hamza, Shaban, and over 50 members of the Jashari family were never surrendered. The collective act of remembering these events underscores the deep historical significance of the day for Kosovo.

The participation of high-ranking officials like Haxhiu at these various memorials reaffirms the national commitment to honoring those who contributed to the establishment and defense of Kosovo’s sovereignty. The tributes served to keep the memory of past struggles and sacrifices central to the national narrative on this important day.
