Over 1000 cases of breast cancer treated in North Macedonia

Breast cancer continues to represent a significant global public health concern, affecting numerous women annually. Despite substantial advancements in diagnostic and treatment methodologies, the disease remains a primary cause of female mortality, particularly when detected at advanced stages. Specialist surgeon Nexhati Jakupi highlighted the increasing incidence of the disease in the region.

He noted a marked increase in the number of cases, comparing the situation in the early 1980s, when Macedonia, Kosovo, and parts of southern Serbia recorded only about 100 cases of breast cancer. According to Jakupi, as of 2026, North Macedonia alone has seen over 1,000 cases of breast cancer treated, while also pointing out that a significant number of diagnoses do not reach formal treatment. Jakupi emphasized that understanding the primary risk factors is crucial for prevention and early intervention.

He identified three main risk factors associated with the development of cancer. Raising awareness about these risk factors and promoting regular screenings are vital components of managing the rising burden of breast cancer across the region. Early detection remains paramount to improving outcomes for women facing this health challenge.
