Thirty-three passengers were safely disembarked from an ATR 42 airplane belonging to Olympic Air, which operates within the AEGEAN group. The aircraft, en route from the Greek island of Rhodes to Karpathos, was forced to return to the “Diagoras” airport on Rhodes shortly after takeoff due to a malfunction involving one of its two engines. Local media reported that smoke was visible emanating from the engine during the flight, and at one point, flames were also observed.
In response to the developing situation, the pilot immediately initiated return procedures to Rhodes. Authorities confirmed that the problematic engine was successfully shut down, allowing the aircraft to continue flight operations using its remaining engine. The landing at the airport was reported to have been without incident.
Upon the emergency landing, an alarm was sounded at the airport facility. Although firefighters and emergency services were stationed near the runway in preparation for any potential issue, their intervention was ultimately deemed unnecessary. All 33 passengers and the three crew members were accounted for following the safe landing.
The incident highlighted the crew’s rapid response and adherence to emergency protocols while navigating the air conditions. The operational issue with the engine required the diversion, but the successful management of the aircraft ensured the safety of everyone onboard.
