Rama: I can speak without the permission of Europe, but not without the permission of the Americans.

Rama Emphasizes Albania’s Role Within NATO Framework

Tirana – Prime Minister of Albania, Edi Rama, has reiterated his views on Albania’s position within international alliances, particularly its role within NATO, during recent remarks. Speaking in an interview, Rama addressed the dynamics of the alliance and the influence of smaller member states. The Prime Minister highlighted the reality that Albania, like other nations within NATO, does not typically hold dominant decision-making power.

Instead, he explained that smaller states often benefit from broader geopolitical developments and the actions of larger member states. “I can speak without the permission of the Greeks, I can speak without the permission of the Europeans, but I cannot speak without the permission of the Americans…” Rama stated, underscoring this perspective. He further clarified, “Yes, we are a member of NATO.

But you know, it’s not that we make a lot of decisions there,” adding that member states frequently assign merit and responsibility to themselves based on the outcomes achieved. The comments reflect Rama’s ongoing commentary on Albania’s foreign policy and its engagement within international structures.

  1. “It’s concerning to hear the Prime Minister express such a firm stance on navigating relationships with both Europe and the United States.”
