Albania’s population has seen a significant rise over the past decade, with a 40% increase since the start of its transition period. A recent report from the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (BERZH) examining the 2025-2026 transition outlines the challenges facing the country. The report highlights a demographic trend characterized by low fertility rates and high net emigration.
The document states that “old age is a burden, but emigration is a necessity,” emphasizing a strategic focus on encouraging emigration, particularly among individuals with education. According to the analysis, Albania’s population growth is projected to remain low, at 0.28% in 2023. This low growth is coupled with rising costs associated with pension payments, which are expected to increase by 0.53% annually until 2023.
Furthermore, the report indicates a projected increase of 0.28% in pension payments annually until 2023. The findings suggest a need to manage population growth and address the financial strain of an aging population through targeted emigration policies.
