Following recent reports of contaminated water in Gostivar, the Democratic Revival of Macedonia (RDM) party has raised alarms regarding a comparable environmental hazard near Skopje. The party has specifically directed attention to the potential risk posed by the “Jugohrom” landfill located in Jegunovce. The RDM argues that preventative action is urgently required to mitigate the threat emanating from the site.
According to the party, the presence of hexavalent chromium from the “Jugohrom” facility constitutes a direct danger to the Rashçe source, which serves as the primary source of drinking water for the entire metropolitan area of Skopje. The RDM stated that waiting for a crisis to occur before responding would result in a major public health emergency for hundreds of thousands of residents. They emphasized that the chemical substance in question, hexavalent chromium, is recognized as an extremely toxic and carcinogenic agent.
Consequently, the party is calling upon relevant state institutions to implement comprehensive and immediate measures. The core demand centers on developing a robust, proactive solution to manage the waste and prevent leachate contamination. The RDM insists that regulatory bodies must take all necessary steps to safeguard the integrity of the Rashçe source before any contamination event can occur.
