Republicans turn their backs on Trump, approve billions of dollars in aid for Ukraine

A significant number of Republican lawmakers have voted in alignment with Democrats to approve a substantial legislative package intended to provide billions of dollars in aid to Ukraine and impose stringent sanctions on Russia. The U.S. House of Representatives passed the measure with 226 votes in favor and 195 against.

This vote represents the most extensive demonstration of support for Ukraine during the potential second term of Donald Trump. The proposed legislation is designed not only to bolster Ukraine’s economy but also to significantly impact Russia’s energy sector through comprehensive sanctions targeting its oil and gas industries. The passage of the bill was notable due to the dissent from within the Republican caucus.

More than a dozen Republican members chose to vote alongside Democrats, defying the stated direction of their party’s leadership and the stated wishes of Trump. Prior to the vote, the Speaker of the House, Mike Johnson, had publicly urged his party members to oppose the measure. According to sources familiar with the matter, Johnson addressed the issue during a private meeting, advising lawmakers to vote against the proposed package.

Nevertheless, the bipartisan support for Ukraine ultimately led to the bill’s passage through the House.
