The directive originated from the administration of former President Donald Trump. Judge Janet Vargas determined that the policy was “contrary to law” and exceeded the legal authority granted to the Secretary of State.
The ban, which was initially put in place in January, implied a suspension of permanent residency visas for nationals of the listed countries. The scope of the restriction was broad, encompassing nations from the Balkans, the Middle East, Africa, Asia, and the Caribbean. Specifically, the list included Montenegro, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Kosovo, alongside the mentioned regions.
For citizens of the Republic of Macedonia, the measure effectively signaled a halt to the process of issuing immigrant visas for those intending to relocate to the United States. The court’s ruling addressed the legality of the administrative action, invalidating the restriction placed on the department’s ability to issue travel and residency documents.
