Road blocked towards the Sferka landfill, KRM “Environment”: 220,000 residents affected

The Regional Waste Company, Ambienti, has reported a significant disruption to waste disposal services at the Sferka sanitary landfill. The inability to process refuse has affected an estimated 220,000 residents across several municipalities, including Peja, Klinë, Istog, Deçan, and Junik. According to statements issued by the company, waste collection operations have come to a standstill because the primary access road to the landfill has been blocked.

The obstruction is attributed to protests by local residents, which has rendered the disposal process impossible. Consequently, Ambienti’s waste collection trucks have been unable to discharge their loads, leading to the suspension of services along scheduled routes. The company emphasized that the continued blockage of the access route is severely complicating the provision of essential waste management services to the affected areas.

Ambienti has formally requested that the Kosovo Police and relevant governmental authorities intervene to clear the area and restore normal operations at the landfill site. This disruption poses immediate logistical challenges for waste management authorities. Until the route is cleared, the accumulated waste cannot be safely processed at the Sferka facility.

The ongoing blockage necessitates official intervention to ensure the continuity of waste removal services for the substantial population served by the region.
