Rocas congratulates North Macedonia on its energy strategy: Reforms shape the path toward the EU

At the regional forum on climate, energy transition, and sustainable development in the Western Balkans (MEF 2026), the EU Ambassador, Michalis Rokas, addressed the critical importance of implementing comprehensive energy plans and achieving defined objectives across the region. Rokas specifically commended North Macedonia for its progress in developing and approving a national energy strategy and accompanying plan. The Ambassador emphasized that these national efforts are particularly significant because numerous policy reforms are becoming actionable through the established Energy Community framework.

These structural advancements are viewed as fundamental components that will significantly shape the trajectory of North Macedonia’s path toward eventual European Union membership. According to Rokas, the sustained focus on energy reform is paramount for regional stability and integration. He highlighted that the recent legislative approvals concerning renewable energy sources, alongside measures protecting the sector, represent concrete steps forward for the nation.

These developments demonstrate a tangible commitment to modernizing the country’s energy infrastructure. The EU’s continued emphasis on these pillars underscores the requirement for deep, systemic changes within the energy sector. By aligning its national policies with broader EU standards, North Macedonia is actively strengthening its governance and market mechanisms.

The convergence of energy planning, legislative updates, and commitment to sustainability positions the country favorably within the broader geopolitical and economic context of the Western Balkans. These coordinated efforts are seen as vital catalysts for achieving long-term energy security and sustainable development across the region.
