Selatin Kaçaniku, head of the “Consumer” Organization, voiced serious concerns regarding the ongoing state of poverty within Kosovo. The situation, according to Kaçaniku, is largely driven by citizens relying heavily on loans and overdrafts to make ends meet. Speaking to Lajme Gazeta Express on April 3rd, 2026, at 9:58, Kaçaniku highlighted a decade-long failure to effectively consolidate the market within the country.
He repeatedly requested that Kosovan prime ministers implement tangible regulations, a request that has consistently been unsuccessful. Kaçaniku emphasized that the most significant burden falls upon the citizens themselves. He expressed deep worry about the escalating reliance on credit and overdraft facilities.
“Over twenty years, I’ve urged the prime ministers of Kosovo to establish a market that would function as a regulator of prices and supply; however, we lack this fundamental element,” he stated. Consequently, citizens are experiencing detrimental effects, particularly through elevated prices and impacting vulnerable groups like pensioners. The situation underscores a critical need for immediate and decisive action to alleviate the hardship faced by the citizens and address the underlying causes of poverty.
