Spanish law enforcement authorities announced on Friday the dismantling of one of the largest criminal networks operating within the Mediterranean region, according to official police statements. The operation resulted in the arrest of 78 individuals and the seizure of 18 high-speed vessels. The police stated that the network utilized these vessels to transport synthetic narcotics, such as ecstasy, traveling from Spain to Algeria. Upon completing this drug transport, the vessels were allegedly redirected to smuggle migrants back toward the Mediterranean coast of Spain and the island of Ibiza. The scale of the operation suggests a long-term, organized effort.
Authorities believe the network was responsible for orchestrating a minimum of 64 separate migrant smuggling operations. These activities, according to the police report, accounted for the passage of more than 2,000 people into Spanish territory.
