Special Court: Detainees can visit Kosovo for humanitarian reasons

The Specialized Chambers in Kosovo have established a legal mechanism allowing individuals held in pre-trial detention to apply for visits to Kosovo based on compelling humanitarian reasons. A video announcement issued by the institution on Monday confirmed that the procedure for these requests has been approved by judges, aligning with international human rights standards. These standards include Article 5 of the European Convention on Human Rights and the United Nations Standard Minimum Rules for the Treatment of Prisoners.

According to the announcement, the judges of the Specialized Chambers have, to date, authorized fourteen such visits for pre-trial detainees. The courts themselves are responsible for the organization and management of these visits. The permission to visit Kosovo is granted only in specific humanitarian cases.

These exceptions are intended to address situations where such visits are deemed necessary for compelling humanitarian reasons. The framework emphasizes adherence to established legal protocols while accommodating necessary personal considerations for those detained.
