Storm hits Romania after 40 degrees Celsius, a dead one – streets are flooded

A significant storm impacted Bucharest, Romania, and an additional 20 districts, resulting in one reported submergence and damage to numerous homes and vehicles, according to emergency services officials. Emergency services reported receiving nearly 2,000 calls for assistance in Bucharest alone, and several metro stations were found to be flooded. Beyond the capital, the inclement weather caused damage across 60 cities and villages.

Telegrafi reported that one fatality occurred when a falling tree struck a vehicle. Police and firefighters were dispatched to multiple districts to manage the aftermath, undertaking efforts to evacuate flooded residences and clear debris. The weather event followed a period of intense heat, as temperatures surpassed 40 degrees Celsius in various parts of the country on Monday and Tuesday.

This preceding heatwave contributed to increased energy consumption and subsequent price increases. The combination of extreme heat and the subsequent storm presented considerable challenges to infrastructure and public safety across the region.
