A strong earthquake, measuring magnitude 6.2 on the Richter scale, impacted Davao Oriental in the southern Philippines. The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) reported that the epicenter of the seismic event was situated 67 kilometers east-southeast of Pondaguitan, located in the open sea.
The depth of the earthquake was recorded at 111.9 kilometers. Initial reports indicated no immediate casualties or structural damage resulting from this tremor. This event follows a more significant seismic incident that occurred the previous week, when a magnitude 7.8 earthquake struck the shores of Mindanao.
That prior earthquake caused widespread alarm and resulted in substantial damage to residential properties, educational facilities, hospitals, and public infrastructure across the region. The aftermath of the previous quake included reports of at least 61 fatalities, 40 individuals still unaccounted for, and over 1,040 people requiring medical attention. The latest strong earthquake in the Philippines serves as a reminder of the region’s seismic activity.
Authorities continue to monitor the area following the 6.2 magnitude tremor.
