Over 130 students at the lower primary-secondary school in Lismir, Fushë-Kosovo, did not commence the new academic year on Tuesday, following a decision by local parents. The parents conducted an inspection of the school’s facilities before withdrawing their children, resulting in a boycott of classes. The decision to withhold the students from the school appears linked to concerns over the building’s physical state.
Previously, in June of this year, the Sanitary Inspectorate from the Ministry of Health had already determined that the conditions within the facility were unsuitable for holding classes. The inspection report detailed several necessary improvements. Key recommendations included the renovation of the toilets and floors, the removal of mold and wall dampness, and the replacement of outdated doors and windows.
Furthermore, the report advised on the necessity of insulating the attic space. According to Nexhat Tërnava, representing the Parents’ Council, the association’s collective request stems directly from these observed deficiencies. The parents emphasized that the current state of the school building compromises the safety and learning environment for the students.
Consequently, the community has taken collective action to halt the commencement of classes until adequate repairs and upgrades are completed, ensuring the school meets required sanitary and structural standards.
