Sweden says it has thwarted a Russian intelligence operation

Sweden’s security service, Säpo, announced on Monday that it successfully thwarted a sophisticated Russian intelligence operation. The operation was reportedly designed to undermine Sweden’s decision-making processes and tarnish the international standing of Sweden, NATO, and the European Union. Säpo stated that the intelligence effort involved an agent who had been recruited within a foreign diplomatic mission located in Stockholm.

According to the security service’s findings, the entire operation was planned and directed by the SVR, the foreign intelligence service of Russia. The execution of the operation was carried out by two Russian secret service agents who benefited from diplomatic immunity. The objective of this Russian intelligence action was to “discredit” Sweden on the international stage.

By intercepting the plot, Säpo aims to mitigate potential damage to Swedish sovereignty and its key alliances. The details provided by the Swedish authorities underscore ongoing security concerns regarding foreign interference targeting Western nations.
