A city official informed dpa on Friday that owners must make a greater effort to clean up after their pets, specifically addressing urine and heavier waste deposits. The city secretary, Umberto Balzaretti, highlighted that dog urine has become a notable issue within the historic pedestrian zone, particularly on the cobblestone surfaces and near lighting posts.
Balzaretti noted that the area requires consistent cleaning, and the warm weather has exacerbated odor concerns. Consequently, dog owners are now required to wash any soiled areas thoroughly with water. Initially, the city plans to issue warnings to any owners observed failing to clean up after their dog.
However, following this warning period, owners found in violation will face a fine of 100 Swiss francs ($123). This measure aims to maintain the cleanliness and aesthetic appeal of the city’s public areas. The directive emphasizes shared responsibility among residents to ensure that the common spaces remain clean for everyone.
