A recent analysis utilizing the standard territorial grid of 1 square kilometer has revealed significant variations in population distribution across Albania’s counties. According to the Final Report of the Administrative-Territorial Reform 2.0, data compiled from the 2023 Census indicates that several regions possess substantial amounts of uninhabited territory. The findings highlight the degree of population concentration within specific areas.
Korça County registered the highest proportion of uninhabited land, with over 80% of its total territory classified as such. Following this, Gjirokastër recorded 77.5% uninhabited, while Vlorë reported 71.4% uninhabited, and Kukës accounted for 70.7%. Other counties also showed high levels of undeveloped space.
Shkodër County reported that 67.2% of its territory was uninhabited, followed by Dibër at 62.3%, and Berat at 60.8%. In contrast, Durrës County demonstrated a much lower percentage of uninhabited land, registering only 20.6% uninhabited. Lezhë and Elbasan counties were noted as being closer to the national average for population density.
This comprehensive data set, which assesses population distribution across the entire territory, underscores the geographical disparities in habitation levels throughout the country. The report suggests that while some counties retain vast tracts of uninhabited land, others exhibit a more consistent settlement pattern.
