The new elections? CEC: We will act in accordance with the constitutional mandate

Kosovo Faces Potential New Elections Following Parliamentary Stalemate

Kosovo faces the possibility of new elections if the Parliament fails to elect a president by April 28th, 2026. The situation stems from a deadlock in parliamentary proceedings, raising concerns about a potential shift to early elections. The Central Election Commission (CEC) has affirmed its commitment to acting in accordance with the constitutional mandate.

Following the current impasse, the CEC is prepared to initiate a new electoral process. This would represent a significant undertaking for the institution, which has previously overseen multiple elections. In 2025, the CEC conducted several key elections, including the regular parliamentary elections on February 9th, local elections on November 12th with a second round for mayors on October 9th, and early parliamentary elections on December 28th.

CEC spokesperson Valmir Elezi acknowledged the challenges presented by organizing new elections within a compressed timeframe. He emphasized that as a constitutional body, the CEC is obligated to proceed if the established timeline for presidential election is not met. The upcoming elections represent a new commitment for the CEC as it navigates this complex political landscape.
