Study Highlights Increased Risk of Drug Poisoning with Common Sedatives
A new study by University College London has raised concerns about the potential for serious drug poisoning when patients combine gabapentinoids with other medications. The research focuses on gabapentinoids, frequently referred to as gabapentin, and their interaction with other common drugs. The findings reveal a significant risk associated with combining gabapentinoids with benzodiazepines – including medications like diazepam and valium – which are frequently prescribed for anxiety and insomnia.
The study indicates that this combination doubles the likelihood of hospital admission due to drug poisoning. Furthermore, the research demonstrated an elevated risk when gabapentinoids are taken alongside opioids, such as codeine, tramadol, or morphine. This combination increased the risk of hospital admission by approximately 30%.
Researchers emphasize the importance of healthcare professionals carefully reviewing patient medication lists to identify potential interactions and mitigate these risks. The study underscores the need for caution and awareness regarding the combined use of these widely prescribed medications.
