These are the consequences of the heat wave in France – the Loire River has become almost unrecognizable

Aerial images indicate that sections of the Loire River in western France have experienced significant drying, leaving only small sandbanks visible. The country is anticipating an intensification of the current heatwave, with temperatures projected to reach 41 degrees Celsius on Friday. Météo-France has issued a red alert for extreme heat across nine departments in the Loire Valley and western France.

Furthermore, an orange alert has been issued for 76 other departments, with exemptions granted for Corsica, the French Riviera, and the northernmost tip of the country. These warnings follow recent wildfires in southern France, which prompted the evacuation of approximately 10,000 residents. The dry vegetation has contributed to the rapid spread of the flames in several areas.

European Union scientists have confirmed that Western Europe experienced its hottest June on record. Compounding the crisis, France’s High Climate Council has cautioned that the nation’s current measures to reduce emissions and adapt to climate change are inadequate. In response, Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu is scheduled to chair an inter-ministerial crisis meeting to coordinate governmental responses.

Local authorities in multiple departments have already begun implementing restrictions on water usage to manage the drought conditions and extreme heat.
