U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) announced on Tuesday that it has issued an immediate detention order targeting specific goods originating from Serbia. The directive mandates the seizure of shipments containing copper and various copper products manufactured by the Chinese entity, Zijin Copper D.O.O.
The action stems from CBP’s determination that there are suspicions of forced labor being utilized during the production processes at the facilities in Serbia. Under the terms of the order, CBP personnel stationed at all U.S. ports of entry are instructed to halt the processing and entry of any copper products associated with Zijin’s Serbian operations.
This enforcement measure represents the second instance of CBP issuing such a detention order concerning goods from Chinese companies operating within Serbia due to allegations of forced labor practices. This follows a previous similar action taken against the company Linglong, which faced a detention order related to vehicle tires produced at its Zrenjanin facility in northern Serbia. The cumulative nature of these actions signals increased regulatory scrutiny by U.S.
authorities regarding the supply chains and labor practices associated with materials entering the United States from the region. The ruling underscores CBP’s commitment to enforcing import regulations designed to prevent goods manufactured under exploitative labor conditions from entering the U.S. market.
