Vučić again comes to Radoić’s defense, experts: Dangerous message for the region

Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić has once again made a public defense of Milan Radoićić, the individual associated with the Banjska incident. During a public address this week, Vučić stated that Radoićić is not facing charges for the Banjska attack itself, but rather for actions related to Kosovo. This statement comes despite Interpol having issued a Red Notice for Radoićić, who has reportedly received security from the Serbian gendarmerie.

Furthermore, Vučić’s support extends to Zvonko Veselinović, despite both men being on American blacklists concerning organized crime and corruption. Kosovo government officials view the President’s statement as evidence that the serbian justice system remains under his influence, particularly as he encourages actions against Kosovo state police officers. Security experts have characterized this message as concerning, calling for a stronger international response.

One expert noted that Vučić’s actions appear to disregard Interpol’s requests, suggesting it is a disregard for the rule of law. This, according to analysts, could encourage extremist elements within Serbia by suggesting impunity for politically motivated attacks. The Octopus Institute stated that Vučić’s public defense risks encouraging regional destabilization.

They emphasized that the close connection between the President and Radoićić suggests that international support for Serbia should be contingent upon accountability measures. The Institute warned that if this pattern continues, Serbia could be encouraged to carry out similar actions in neighboring countries. Notably, despite indictments naming Radoićić as the leader of a terrorist group, and convictions in Pristina, Radoićić remains at large in Serbia, where he maintains registered residency.

Both the EU and the United States have repeatedly urged Serbian authorities to arrest and prosecute those responsible for the Banjska attack.
