Lumir Abdixhiku, the leader of the Democratic League of Kosovo (LDK), has indicated that his party does not intend to claim the position of Speaker of the Parliament. Abdixhiku asserted that constitutional provisions dictate that this role should be assigned to the leading political party. These statements followed a meeting involving Abdixhiku, the acting Prime Minister, and Albin Kurti, the leader of the Vetëvendosje Movement.
During the discussion, Abdixhiku stressed that if a consensus is not reached by August 6th, the process for constituting the Parliament must proceed independently. “If we do not reach an agreement by August 6th, we have stated that the constitution must proceed,” Abdixhiku noted. He clarified the LDK’s stance on the chairmanship, stating that the party is not pursuing the role of Speaker.
He characterized the position as ceremonial, arguing that it should reflect the proposal of the dominant party, a point he linked to constitutional requirements. Regarding other outstanding matters, the LDK indicated flexibility, suggesting that while they have secured an extension for those issues, resolving them at the earliest possible date remains preferable for all parties involved. The focus remains on adhering to the constitutional framework while navigating the complex political negotiations surrounding the formation of the new governing body.
