Zelensky: Possibility of negotiations with Russia before winter

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky stated that the battlefield situation presents a current opportunity for diplomatic resolution concerning the conflict with Russia. In an interview with CBS News, Zelensky suggested that a window for negotiations is currently open. According to reports from Telegrafi, Zelensky assessed that Russia began losing the military initiative in December 2025.

During his remarks, Zelensky conveyed this assessment to American partners, emphasizing the deteriorating military position of Russian forces. He stated, “I told them in January, I think we have a window for negotiations, because every month they will lose more and more people, and they will lose, because of these reasons, they will lose the initiative on the battlefield.”

The President’s comments suggest a strategic shift in the conflict, indicating that Ukraine believes the momentum is turning against Russia. Zelensky mentioned that he was awaiting discussions with Witkoff and Kushner in Kyiv, suggesting readiness for high-level diplomatic talks.

The underlying premise of his statement is that continued military setbacks for Russia will create the necessary conditions for a viable negotiation process to commence.
