The commencement of the third phase of financing for the construction of the Kriva Pallanka – Deve Bair railway segment, a critical component of Corridor 8, has been officially initiated following the signing of key financial agreements. These agreements establish the necessary capital for the continued development of this vital infrastructure project. The funding structure is multifaceted, drawing support from major international financial bodies.
Specifically, the financing was underpinned by the Western Balkans Investment Framework (WBIF) provided by the European Union. Further financial backing was formalized through agreements with the European Investment Bank (EIB) and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD). The successful securing of these multilateral funds marks a significant milestone for the railway’s progression.
The signing ceremony took place at the Government building, attended by several high-level officials, including Prime Minister Christian Mikoski, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Transport Aleksandar Nikolloski, and Minister of Finance Gordana Dimitrieska-Koçoska. Representing international partners were Ben Nupnau, Deputy Head of the EU Delegation, and representatives from the lending institutions, including Fatih Turkmenogllu, EBRD Director for North Macedonia, and Bjorn Gabriel, EIB Director for North Macedonia. The successful conclusion of these financial negotiations solidifies the commitment to enhancing regional connectivity.
The substantial investment secured from these European partners is projected to significantly boost transport capacity along Corridor 8, facilitating trade and economic integration across the region. The agreement formalizes the pathway for the completion of this crucial railway link.
