Water Scarcity Concerns Grow in Kosovo Due to Climate Change and Management Issues
Kosovo faces escalating challenges regarding water supply, according to experts citing the combined impacts of climate change and inadequate water resource management. This warning emerged during a discussion on “Përballje Podcast” featuring Krenare Salihu, an environmental organization representative from ‘Ecopana,’ and Muhamet Hajrullahu, editor-in-chief of Telegrafi. Salihu highlighted the tangible effects of climate change already observed within Kosovo.
She pointed to a notable absence of substantial snowfall in recent years, specifically referencing the lack of significant snowfall in Pristina over the past three to four years. Furthermore, she noted a decrease in autumn rainfall and a marked increase in summer temperatures. Data indicates a significant rise in average temperatures, according to Salihu.
“The temperature has risen…” she stated, emphasizing the concerning trend. The combined effect of reduced precipitation and elevated temperatures is creating a precarious situation for water resources within the region. The discussion underscored the urgent need for improved water management strategies to mitigate the growing risks associated with climate change and ensure a sustainable water supply for the population of Kosovo.
