Scholtz: Germany has called for the abolition of the principle of unanimity in the EU, will not take North Macedonia into account

Germany Proposes Shift in EU Foreign Policy Voting, Raising Concerns in Bulgaria

Germany’s Foreign Minister Johann Wudefull has advocated for a change in the European Union’s foreign policy decision-making process, specifically calling for the removal of the principle of unanimity. The proposal suggests replacing it with a majority vote, altering the current system where all member states must agree on foreign policy matters. This shift has prompted concern among some Bulgarian public figures regarding the potential impact on national sovereignty.

Angel Zhambaski, a former MEP and former member of OBRM-BND, voiced strong opposition to the proposed change. Zhambaski argued that abandoning the principle of unanimity would “fundamentally and dramatically change the situation,” asserting it would “categorically violate the rights of a country like Bulgaria.” He highlighted the disparity in representation within the European Parliament, noting that Germany possesses 90 representatives compared to Bulgaria’s 17. “With a simple majority vote, everything that Germany wants…” Zhambaski stated in a media address.

The move reflects a debate within the EU regarding the balance between collective decision-making and the influence of larger member states. The proposal centers on revising the established voting principle.
