Pendarovski: Constitutional changes are not a hoax; OBRM-PDUKM is manipulating for political points

Former president Stevo Pendarovski commented on the apparent confusion within the ruling coalition and the party in power concerning their pre-election rhetoric. He addressed the recent thesis put forth by OBRM-PDUKM, which suggested that constitutional amendments do not represent the ultimate obstacle to Bulgaria’s integration into the European Union. Instead, the group argued that such changes merely initiate a broader process where Bulgaria might encounter new blockades related to historical identity issues.

In an interview with “360 Degrees,” Pendarovski expanded on this analysis, asserting that the complexity of EU accession means that not only Bulgaria, but any member state possesses the authority to establish additional conditions during negotiations. He emphasized that EU integration is inherently a prolonged process spanning many years. Furthermore, Pendarovski directly refuted the assertion that Bulgaria intends to impede the process regarding Macedonia due to unresolved identity matters.

He stated that such claims are inaccurate. According to Pendarovski, the current political discourse appears muddled regarding the necessary steps for accession. He maintained that the path to EU membership is not a single hurdle but rather a complex, multi-faceted process requiring adherence to evolving standards and political consensus among all parties involved.
