This call was made during the launch event for the Council of Europe’s Platform for the Protection of Journalism and Journalist Safety. Gertruda stressed the necessity of maintaining a secure working environment for those in the press, stating that public officials must refrain from targeting media outlets and journalists.
Furthermore, he advocated for wider consultation processes when drafting new legislation pertaining to the Independent Media Commission (KPM) and Kosovo’s Radio Television (RTK). According to Gertruda, any forthcoming laws governing the KPM and RTK must incorporate broad consultations to ensure that the processes remain both inclusive and transparent. The statement underscores the EU’s commitment to protecting press freedom and the safety of journalists within Kosovo.
By calling for restraint from public officials, Gertruda aims to safeguard the operational space for the media, thereby mitigating potential attacks and fostering an environment conducive to independent reporting.
