A large fire engulfed the village of Penkovë in the Municipality of Selanikë around midday on Wednesday. The blaze spread rapidly, exacerbated by high ambient temperatures and strong winds, which presented significant challenges for emergency response teams. Initially, controlling the intensity of the fire proved difficult, partly due to the limited local resources, as the Municipality of Selanikë reportedly possesses only one fire truck.
To manage the extensive flames, firefighting teams from neighboring regions, including Vlorë and Himara, were dispatched to assist. These external units worked for several hours to contain the widespread fire. The incident resulted in material damage, notably the burning of several vehicles owned by a private entity that functions as a spare parts supplier.
According to the business owner, Tomian Hysaj, the economic loss stemming from the fire is estimated to be approximately 35 million lekë. Authorities and local officials managed to contain the fire after sustained efforts from multiple emergency services. The investigation into the exact causes of the large-scale fire remains ongoing.
