An unidentified drone detonated in Bulgarian airspace near the border with Romania, according to reports from Bulgarian authorities. During a press conference, Bulgarian Prime Minister Rumen Radev stated that the drone entered Bulgarian airspace originating from Romania. The explosion occurred approximately 1,000 meters from a Trans-Balkan gas compressor station, situated near the former border crossing point of Kardam between the two nations.
Radev detailed that the incident was initially detected when Romanian border police observed the drone, followed by a loud explosion heard by a patrol from the General Toshevo border police. The Prime Minister confirmed that authorities were able to immediately pinpoint the location of the drone’s detonation. He emphasized that, following the explosion, there were no reported casualties or damage to any buildings or critical infrastructure.
The incident highlighted cross-border security concerns, as the drone crossed from the territory of Romania into Bulgaria. While the immediate danger was contained, the involvement of border police from both countries underscored the collaborative effort in managing the airspace along the frontier. Officials indicated that despite the investigation, the physical remains of the drone were not recovered as it traversed the border zone.
