On September 1, 2026, law enforcement officials from the Ohrid Lake Border Surveillance Police Station conducted operational checks within the waters of Lake Ohrid. The mission focused on monitoring activities related to illegal fishing practices and the retrieval of discarded fishing gear. During the inspection, authorities reported the discovery of significant amounts of abandoned fishing nets and associated equipment in a specific segment of the lake, situated between the villages of Struga, Kalisht, and Radozhda.
These nets were identified as being strictly prohibited for commercial fishing activities. The recovery effort, which followed instructions issued by the public prosecutor, involved personnel from both the lake police and the Regional Center for Border Issues stationed in the western sector of the lake. Officers successfully recovered twenty abandoned fishing nets.
The total length of the retrieved nets was calculated to be approximately 4,000 meters. Furthermore, the operation yielded a substantial catch. Authorities documented the recovery of 872 pieces of Ohrid Belvica, resulting in a total recorded weight of 116.9 kilograms.
