Stefan Andonovski, the Minister of Digital Transformation, has announced the establishment of “Vezilka,” which will serve as the first artificial intelligence center in Macedonia. The center is scheduled for a formal promotion next week and is positioned to play a significant role in advancing digital capabilities within the country. A primary objective of the initiative is the development of a comprehensive Macedonian language model and the creation of a robust, local digital database.
According to Andonovski, the project is specifically designed to ensure that the unique linguistic elements, cultural nuances, and identity of the Macedonian language are accurately represented within modern technological frameworks. He elaborated that “Vezilka” aims to facilitate the digitalization of the entire Macedonian language corpus. This effort will support the development of a large-scale language model accessible to diverse sectors, including academic institutions, private companies, governmental bodies, and the general citizenry.
The strategic importance of this center lies in its ability to mitigate the current reliance on foreign digital tools. Andonovski noted that existing international technologies frequently struggle to recognize the specific linguistic, historical, and cultural context inherent in the Macedonian language. By building indigenous capacity, the new center seeks to provide a localized technological foundation.
This development underscores a commitment by the government to technological self-sufficiency, positioning the center as a key pillar in Macedonia’s digital transformation agenda, as stated by Minister Andonovski.
