Congressman Joe Wilson reacted strongly to remarks made by the Serbian Minister for Public Administration and Local Self-Government, Snezhana Paunović. Paunović stated to the Serbian television station Kurir that she would have “ethnically cleansed Kosovo” if she were in the position of Slobodan Milošević in 1998. The American congressman characterized these statements as “unthinkable and inflammatory.”
Wilson asserted that such comments provide grounds for the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) to reject Belgrade’s bid to host the organization’s annual meeting in 2027.
He explicitly stated, “For exactly this reason, PACE should not consider Belgrade’s offer to host the annual meeting in 2027.” According to the congressman, the remarks undermine the credibility of the Serbian government in international forums. The Wilson statement directly challenges the political standing of the Serbian representative. The congressman emphasized that the nature of the comments warrants a refusal of the hosting bid.
By linking Paunović’s alleged statements to the potential failure of the bid, Wilson aims to influence the international perception of Serbia’s readiness for the role. The congressman maintained that these inflammatory remarks disqualify Belgrade from hosting the 2027 meeting.
