Kosovo judokas Akil Gjakova and Dardan Cena have achieved successful starts at the 2026 Taranto Mediterranean Games, securing qualifications for the quarter-finals of their respective weight categories. Dardan Cena began the competition by advancing through the initial rounds of the judo tournament in the up to 81 kilograms division. Cena successfully defeated the Spaniard Jose Maria Mendiola using a ‘yuko’ throw.

This victory earned him a spot in the quarter-finals, where he is scheduled to compete against the judoka representing Serbia, Mihajlo Simin. In a separate event, Akil Gjakova also secured a victory in the up to 73 kilograms category. Gjakova defeated the Cypriot competitor Andreou Kyprianos.

His passage to the quarter-finals was confirmed with a ‘yuko’ throw awarded in extra time. For his quarter-final match, Akil Gjakova will face an opponent from France. The performances mark a strong showing for the athletes at the Mediterranean Games.
