North Macedonia has taken a major advance in developing its inland waterway sector after a lengthy period. Deputy Prime Minister and Transport Minister, Aleksandar Nikoloski, revealed details in Ohrid earlier today. For the initial time, the country is now able to administer professional examinations for both ship captains and their crews locally.
Previously, all assessments were carried out overseas, a situation that presented considerable difficulties for maritime professionals. This practice added to the workload and also impacted the safety of transport along the waterways. Now, a significant change has been achieved.
The initial domestic examination has been completed with success. Certificates were granted to one ship captain, who has been authorized to operate on international routes, alongside eight other ship captains authorized for use within state waterways. Furthermore, a worker also received certification.
This development represents a crucial step in the professionalization of North Macedonia’s inland navigation. The ability to conduct examinations domestically alleviates pressure on personnel and enhances the security of maritime operations. This marks a pivotal moment in the sector’s evolution, signifying a commitment to improved standards and safety.
