ZF, a German automotive company, unveiled a new active noise reduction system at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas. This technology is designed to substantially enhance the driving comfort experience by targeting a specific source of cabin disturbance known as “road noise.” This noise originates from air vibrations within the tires, which are subsequently transmitted into the vehicle cabin via the chassis structure. The innovative aspect of ZF’s solution lies in its operational methodology, as it bypasses the need for supplementary speakers or microphones.
Instead, the system utilizes existing chassis sensors and actuators to accurately detect and neutralize these vibrational inputs. The collected data is then processed by a proprietary algorithm. This algorithm generates counteracting signals, which are subsequently directed to the vehicle’s semi-active shock absorbers.
By inducing precise micro-movements, the system effectively mitigates the noise transfer. ZF reports that the current iteration of the new system is capable of reducing ambient noise levels by up to three decibels. This advancement represents a shift in automotive noise management, moving toward a more integrated and hardware-based approach.
The technology aims to provide a more serene and comfortable cabin environment for occupants without requiring significant overhauls to the vehicle’s existing components.
