Gjirokastër Castle breaks record, 100,000 visitors in six months, remains the most visited

The Argjirosi Fortress in Gjirokastër recorded a significant influx of visitors, attracting one hundred thousand tourists during the first half of this year. This figure positions the fortress among the most visited historical monuments in Albania. Ardis Duka, Director of the Regional Directorate of Cultural Heritage, confirmed that these statistics indicate a noticeable increase when compared to the same period in the previous year.

According to Duka, the majority of these visitors originate from international sources, establishing Gjirokastër as a highly favored destination for cultural tourism across the globe. The consistent high traffic underscores the growing international appreciation for the region’s historical architecture. In response to this sustained interest, the Regional Directorate of Cultural Heritage is actively managing preservation efforts.

The department is currently undertaking necessary maintenance and restoration work on various sections of the fortress. These ongoing interventions are crucial to safeguard the site’s unique historical and architectural integrity for future generations. The combination of robust tourism figures and dedicated conservation efforts highlights the site’s current importance.

The management aims to balance the demands of a large, international visitor base with the meticulous care required to maintain the structural and cultural value of this prominent landmark.
